Atau YAMASHITA est un artiste aux multiples talents (pianiste, photographe, graphiste...), influencé par ses origines et ses diverses expériences, qui met en avant la perspective graphique de ce qui nous entoure. Né à Tsukuba en 1992 d'une mère professeur d'anglais et d'un père pasteur, Atau est inspiré par la culture européenne et particulièrement française.
À 16 ans, en parallèle à son parcours scolaire, il travaille en freelance et met son talent au service d'entreprises japonaises concevant des supports de communication graphique. Toujours animé par une curiosité artistique, il collabore avec les musiciens Yumiko FUKAO, Gérard POULET, Emmanuel GIRARD ou encore des institutions tel l’Opéra Orchestre national Montpellier en concevant leurs affiches promotionnelles. Autodidacte, il s’intéresse, dès son adolescence, à la photographie qui deviendra une véritable passion. Lors de ses différents voyages, notamment en Europe et au Japon, il va explorer cet art et chercher à définir son propre style. Il partage sa vision esthétique au travers d’un blog et des réseaux sociaux, et ses œuvres font partie de collections particulières en France, au Japon ou en Italie. Ses pas le mèneront finalement en France où, après plusieurs séjours, il reprendra des études de Design à l'Université de Nîmes, sa ville d'adoption depuis 2017.
À l'image de Chopin, le compositeur qui l’inspire, Atau se dégage de la rigueur des techniques artistiques proposant une œuvre profonde, sensuelle... et le concernant, toute japonaise.
« La majeure partie de son décor somptueux constamment caché dans l'ombre, [le laque] suscite des résonances inexprimables », ces mêmes résonances évoquées par J. TANIZAKI dans son « Éloge de l'ombre », définissent tout le travail d’Atau : extraire dans le détail graphique du sujet toute son essence, sa profondeur, tout ce qui ne se voit pas forcément à l’œil nu mais qui exprime tant de choses. Atau est un photographe qui révèle ce qui se cache derrière l’objet, l'architecture, le visage, pour laisser s'ouvrir de nouvelles lueurs qui restent inaccessibles si on ne prend pas le temps de les interroger, de les admirer.

Atau Yamashita is a multi-talented artist (pianist, photographer, graphic designer), with a diversity of artistic background and experience, who puts an emphasis on the graphic perspective of the world around us. Born in Tsukuba in 1992 from a mother, an English teacher and a father who is a pastor, Atau is inspired by European culture and particularly French.
Working as freelance at the age of 16 and doing his studies at the same time, Atau has been able to offer his talent to Japanese companies by designing media for graphic communication. He has always been driven by an artistic thirst for knowledge and has collaborated with musicians such as Yumiko FUKAO, Gérard POULET, Emmanuel GIRARD or institutions such as the Opéra Orchestre national Montpellier Occitanie for their promotional flyers. Self-taught, he became interested, from his adolescence, in photography. This interest would later morph into a real passion. During his various trips, particularly in Europe and in Japan, Atau has been exploring this art and seeks to define his own style. He shares his aesthetic vision through a blog and a number of social networks, and his works are part of privates collections in France, in Japan or in Italy. His journey ultimately led him to France where, after several visits, he resumed his studies in Design at the University of Nîmes, his adopted city since 2017.
Like Chopin, the composer who inspires Atau, he gets out of the rigors of artistic techniques and proposes works that are profound, sensual... and completely Japanese.
"Most of its sumptuous décor, constantly hidden in the shadows, [the lacquer] gives rise to indescribable resonances”, these same resonances referred to J. TANIZAKI in his "Praise of the Shadow", define the whole work of Atau: to extract, in the graphic detail of the subject, all its essence, its depth, everything that is not necessarily visible to the naked eye but which expresses divers dimensions of its identity. Atau is a photographer who enhances what is behind the object, the architecture, the face, so that new insights that remain inaccessible can open up. Such can only emerge if one takes the time to question them..... and to admire them.

山下 与（やました あたう）はピアノや写真、グラフィックデザイン等、マルチに活動するの表現者。１９９２年、茨城県つくば市にて牧師の父と英語教師の母の間に生まれ、幼少の頃より西洋文化に触れて育つ。そのスタイルは、様々な文化や経験に影響を受けながら、人々の周りにある物のグラフィック的側面を強調した諸作品に象徴される。
１６歳より学業と並行してグラフィックデザイナーとしてフリーランスで活動、これまでに深尾由美子やジェラール・プーレ、エマニュエル・ジラールや新垣勉など音楽家や、モンペリエ国立オペラ座の広告制作を手がける。同時期より独学で写真を始め、日本国内やヨーロッパでの撮影活動を通して様々な写真表現の研鑽を積む。ブログやSNSにて写真の配信をつづけ、作品は日本、フランス、イタリアなどのプライベートコレクションに収められている。その後、複数回訪れたフランスへと住居を移し、２０１７年より第二のホームグラウンドとなるフランス南部・ニームの国立ニーム大学にてデザインを学ぶ。
作曲家ショパンのスタイルにしばしばインスピレーションを得、芸術の形式的厳格さを守りながらも、より一層深く感覚的な作品を生み出し続けている。
被写体を部分的にフレームに切り取りながらも、被写体の本質や奥深さのような触知できない要素の抽出を試みる写真のスタイルは、谷崎潤一郎がその著書『陰翳礼讃』で「豪華絢爛な模様の大半を闇に隠してしまっているのが、云い知れぬ余情を催すのである。」と表した日本的美学にも影響を受けている。造形物、建築物、生物などの被写体と多面的に向き合い、被写体の裏に隠れた新たな一面が写真を通して現れるよう試み続けている。
